What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. —A.W. Tozer
Belief is supernatural. If you think about it, there’s really no reason on earth why a biological organism would ever evolve by natural processes to the point where it could contemplate and consider things outside of the natural physical world. No, the capacity to believe is a supernatural gift given to us by God:
- Belief determines our perceptions of reality.
- Belief shapes every thought, decision, and action.
- Belief defines the parameters of what is possible.
- Belief emerges from the soul—from that inner core of our being, that defines who we are and what we do.
- Belief even alters the contour of eternity.
Why is belief so amazingly important? I think it’s because belief is the bridge to a real relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Relationships can either be based on works and legalism or belief and grace. When Jesus was asked what works God requires in our relationship with Him, Jesus’ answer must have stunned them.
Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” (John 6:28-29)
Jesus knows that life transformation does not come from performance but from belief in Him. If you trust Him, your works will be a natural extension of your relationship with Him. That was a radical shift in thinking back then, and it still is today!
Jesus, transform my mind according to this truth! I don’t want to be conformed to the ways of the world. I want the kind of belief that sets me free by setting You free to live through me. Amen.
